DVD Synopsis and information:
A fantastic film about chess, a boy and his father and about life. A young Josh Waitzkin, played brilliantly by Max Pomerac, discovers he has a talent for playing chess. His father (played by Joe Mantegna) locates a private teacher for his son, Bruce Pandolfini, played marvelously by Sir Ben Kingsley. The story then begins the real journey of discovery for all the principal characters. For Josh's father wants his son to excel at chess but at what price? The emotion and drama that unfolds is subtle yet powerful.
This movie has an engrossing story and is appropriate for the entire family. Laurence Fishburne also gives a great individual performance as the street wise speed chess expert. All the character performances come together in a great script to make for a super movie experience.

The disc itself looks very nice with a clear and clean anamorphic widescreen presentation. The look of this film does the actual content justice. A fantastic musical score also accompanies the film with sweeping and emotional sounds that continuously fill the movie. The soundtrack is clean and sounds very clear. The direction and cinematography is steady and excellent throughout. Tension and drama fill each scene as well as fantastic character work by the actors.
A great family movie full of heart and triumph. This is a must own family drama that everyone will enjoy. The onscreen chemistry between Pomeranc, Kingsley and Fishburne is truly amazing. The innocence portrayed by Pomeranc is tremendous. You will be surprised at the emotion and drama this movie delivers. With Fischer's passing in 2008 this movie has a deeper sense of purpose and understanding. Searching For Bobby Fischer DVD will move you throughout the film.

Chess as a backdrop for drama really works in this film, thanks to the solid script and performances. With a great story, script and characters you will lose yourself in this fantastic piece of cinematic magic. Chess and this boy's love for his father and the game make this movie pure cinema energy. Bruce wants to teach Josh chess at the highest level but even he loses sight that Josh is a normal young boy in every other way, except for his prowess at chess. Josh, Bruce and his dad begin to learn about each other and the true importance of their relationship with each other. The character interaction between Ben Kingsley, Laurence Fishburne, Joe Mantegna and Max Pomeranc is nothing short of tremendous.

The heart of the film is Max Pomeranc, he breathes life, sweetness and realism in his part as Josh. It's easy to see why this has remained such a strong film for the past 20 years. This was Max's first feature film and he steals each scene that he's in. Each scene delivers powerful emotion and is worthy of multiple viewings. All the performances and characters are extremely well written and acted making this a great family film for all to enjoy again and again.
