The Theory Of Flight DVD 1998: Helena Bonham Carter
DVD Synopsis and information: Richard (played superbly by Kenneth Branagh) is a struggling and frustrated artist that is plunging nose first into a tailspin known only as a midlife crisis. Richard ditches his uppity and snobbish girlfriend and rips apart all his own paintings in an effort to make a hang glider out of the surviving canvases and stretchers. His initial and maiden flight with the device lands him not on a runway but in court, where he's assigned to serve community service. Richard's first assignment is to serve as an assistant to Jane (played fabulously by Helena Bonham Carter), who herself is a young woman that has been stricken with Lou Gehrig's disease (also known as ALS). Sadly Jane's disease is in its final stages, but she is handling her plight with a airport full of feisty attitude. Jane's mind is as sharp as it ever was.
Needless to say Richard and Jane do not get off on the right propeller, but she begins to awkwardly reveal to him that she has not been with a man sexually and that she would like for Richard to help her to make that happen. He conjures up a wild idea of holding up a bank to pay for a less than respectable gigolo, that leads to some odd and strange comedy. All the while Richard has been putting together an glider out of his many paintings and available junk piles. His concocted plane makes the crudest of flight craft look like modern fighter jets.
The Theory of Flight DVD is a fun and interesting study of two highly unusual people that learn about and find one another. What could have been a run of the mill RomCom and sentimental tearjerker is made with taste, dignity and humanity and is believable due to the magnificent performances of the two lead actors. Branagh's Richard is a craggy, and troubled man who finds redemption and love in his special friendship in Jane. The fascinating dynamic of their unorthodox relationship causes us to muse about the patronizing way we often deal with disabled people.
The Theory Of Flight DVD is a mesmerizing drama and holds up well nearly 20 years later. The Theory Of Flight DVD is a wonderful story and is well acted.
